“A Great Miracle in a Little Room”: Thomas Traherne and the Intrinsic Value of Nonhuman Animals.G. P. Marcar - 2022 - Journal of Animal Ethics 12 (2):128-137.
The writings of English poet and mystic Thomas Traherne (1626–1674) remain a relatively underexplored reservoir. Traherne's technological context includes the invention of the telescope (1608) as well as the microscope (c. 1590). As will become evident in this article, Traherne's expositions on creation display an imagination that is adept at placing itself behind both types of lenses. This article focuses on Traherne's treatment of two types of insects—the fly and the ant—in order to extrapolate some of the insights that can (...)

Among the most outstanding discoveries of the last century is one that is not quite as momentous as the theory of relativity or cybernetics. It may even still be enigmatic. It has no one single author, it is not expressed in a single formula, conception, or invention. Nonetheless it is worth all the others combined.

Aquinas' Quinque Viae: Fools, Evil, and the Hiddenness of God.G. P. Marcar - 2015 - Heythrop Journal 56 (1):67-75.
At present a broad consensus may be discerned on Aquinas' ‘five ways' for proving the existence of God: either he is responding to atheism per se by means of five rational arguments, or he is not responding to any formal denial of God's existence. Both of these approaches ignore the two specific objections Aquinas raises prior to the five ways: evil is incompatible with the existence of an infinite goodness , and the world does not require an external explanation . The Lex Irnitana, ch. 84, the promise of vadimonium and the jurisdiction of proconsuls.G. P. Burton - 1996 - Classical Quarterly 46 (01):217-.
In an important recent article, A. Rodger expounded a cogent analysis of ch. 84 of the Lex Irnitana and especially of the logic of its account of the limits of the jurisdiction of the duumviri . He sums up his analysis of the jurisdiction of the duumviri as follows: ‘the picture which emerges is coherent, as we should expect. The duumvir has jurisdiction in cases up to 1,000 sesterces. In such cases the plaintiff may insist on his case being heard (...)

Towards a functionally humane organisation: synergy between Indian and Western human values.G. P. Rao - 2015 - Burlington, VT: Gower. Edited by Amita Srivastava.
Human values, by their very nature, are situational and culture specific. It would, therefore, be unrealistic to think that we can 'transplant' or 'transport' values from one country or culture to another with ease. This text identifies suitable human values which cut across national boundaries and cultures to facilitate organisations wishing to advance their businesses and strategic management capabilities towards a functionally humane organisation (FHO).

The Quiet Lake and the Hidden Spring: Locating the Ground in Kierkegaard's Works of Love.G. P. Marcar - 2022 - Studies in Christian Ethics 35 (4):748-764.
At the end of the prayer with which he begins Works of Love (1847), Søren Kierkegaard notes that while ‘works of love’ might normally be viewed as a subset of worthwhile human endeavours or ‘works’, from heaven's perspective no work can be pleasing unless it is a work of love. From this arises the question—which Kierkegaard himself moves swiftly to address—of what distinguishes a work of ‘love’ from other, non-loving works? In this article, and with particular reference to Jacob Boehme (...)

Explorations in Rhetorical Criticism.G. P. Mohrmann & Charles J. Stewart (eds.) - 1973 - Pennsylvania State University Press.
In this first volume of original essays on rhetorical criticism to appear in many years, the authors stress active engagement in the critical process. Bearing in mind the complaint frequently leveled at rhetorical criticism—that method as method has taken precedence over understanding and appreciation—the editors encouraged innovation, and the contributors responded by moving beyond the merely theoretical to explore implications through implied criticism, participating in the activity rather than merely talking about it. Consequently, these essays avoid further lamentation over the (...)

From Subsistence to Advanced Material Production.G. P. Manish & Benjamin Powell - 2015 - In Peter J. Boettke & Christopher J. Coyne, The Oxford Handbook of Austrian Economics. Oxford University Press USA.
This chapter provides a summary of the lessons that the Austrian theory of capital holds for the field of development economics. It provides an introduction to the concepts of the structure of production and time preference and a brief overview of how the rate of time preference limits both the available pool of savings and the extent of capital formation. The implications that this uniquely Austrian insight holds for the theory of economic growth are spelled out, in particular the fact (...)

Climacus’ Miracle: Another Look at “the Wonder” in Philosophical Fragments through a Spinozist Lens.G. P. Marcar - 2019 - Kierkegaard Studies Yearbook 24 (1):59-84.
In Chapter 2 of the Philosophical Fragments, Søren Kierkegaard’s pseudonym Johannes Climacus poetises about a “king who loved a maiden.” Climacus concludes this venture with a bold claim: what he has just described is “so different from any human poem” that it should not be regarded as a poem at all, but as “the wonder” [Vidunderet] which leads one to exclaim in adoration that “[t]his thought did not arise in my own heart!” In the subsequent chapter of Philosophical Fragments, Climacus (...)

Whose Tradition? Which Enlightenment? What Content? Engelhardt, Hauerwas, Capaldi, and the Future of Christian Bioethics.G. P. McKenny - 1995 - Christian Bioethics 1 (1):84-96.
The development of a content-full Christian bioethics requires an analysis of the particular contents and traditions which different Christians bring to morality. For Hauerwas, the content of Christian ethics is the speech and practices of the community. For Engelhardt, only a content-full tradition, such as the Orthodox tradition, will be able to arrive at closure on the moral issues presented by the contemporary practice of medicine. Capaldi calls, in contrast, for a Kantian society of autonomous self-legislators whose responsible freedom is (...)
